Drug Testing, Physicals & Medical Testing

WHY YOU SHOULD PERFORM SUBSTANCE ABUSE TESTING

The impact of substance abuse by an employee in the workplace can be one of the most costly, but invisible, line items on a company’s balance sheet. The costs associated with workplace accidents, lost productivity, health insurance, staffing, training, and workers’ compensation are incalculable. It can have negative overall effect on employee morale and the work environment.

According to a 2008 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) study over 75 percent of drug users, nearly 80 percent of binge drinkers and over 60 percent of adults classified with substance abuse or dependence are employed full time, and these numbers have stayed pretty consistent over the years. The U.S. Department of Labor estimates drug use costs employers nationally $75 billion to $100 billion per year. Studies show substance abusers are 10 times more likely to miss work, 5 times more likely to file workers’ compensation claims, are 33 percent less productive than non-abusers, and are 3.6 times more likely to be involved in work related accidents.

Having a pre-employment drug screening policy may make those potential problem employees apply elsewhere at a company that does not test, moving the liability for hiring them, and the many problems that come with those employees from you to your competitors. In addition to giving you the competitive advantage it will also give you a more stable, productive and safer work environment for all your employees.
